The Shell
One of the main functions of a building is to provide shelter to human beings so they can carry out their daily activities. The element of the building that delimits the inner space of a building is the ‘building envelope’. It can be described in general terms as a protective barrier surrounding the inner spaces. The envelope is in fact like the skin of a building with the structure being the skeleton.
The envelope of a building acts as a separation of various environments creating a sort of a partition between the inner and outer spaces so that interior conditions can be controlled and maintained. To achieve this, different materials are required.
